Why sites run their own awards
A site-run award gives students a reason to sign up and come back. For students, it is a quick extra entry. The structures differ more than the headlines suggest, so it pays to read the rules.
The awards, side by side
- ScholarshipOwl: a "$50,000 No Essay Scholarship". Its FAQ describes a monthly random draw in which four students win $1,000 each, plus two extra winners in December. Signing up enters you automatically, with no fee.
- Niche: a "$40,000 Niche No Essay Scholarship" with one winner and "Requirements None"; the listing we read had a deadline of October 15, 2026. Niche also links a $2,000 no-essay award. Winners are selected and notified by email by Votigo, its fulfillment partner. Seniors who apply may also become eligible for admission and scholarship offers from Niche Direct Admissions partner colleges.
- BigFuture: "$40,000 and $500 BigFuture Scholarships" with "No essay, no minimum GPA or test score". Entries are earned by completing steps on your BigFuture dashboard. The College Board says BigFuture has awarded over $23 million to over 24,000 students since 2019.
- Scholly (Sallie Mae): a $5,000 Grad School No Essay Scholarship and a $2,000 No Essay Scholarship.
- Unigo: monthly awards such as the Unigo $10K Scholarship, open to US residents aged 14 and up. Unigo says it has awarded over $610,000 since 2007.
- Bold.org: its scholarships are funded by donors on the platform, and its app offers one-tap applications for no-essay awards. Bold.org's own app-only award was not read for this post.
What the structures mean for you
A single-winner award, like Niche's $40,000, is one big draw. ScholarshipOwl's structure spreads the headline across many smaller monthly prizes, so there are more winners but each wins less. BigFuture ties entries to planning steps, so the more steps you complete, the more entries you earn, per its description.
None of the pages we read publish how many students enter. With random drawings, that number decides your odds, so treat every one as a long shot.
How winners are told
Read the rules for who contacts winners. Niche is specific: official mail comes only from Niche or @votigo.com, and a winner who does not reply within two weeks is replaced. Check spam folders and do not answer a message asking for a fee or bank details to release a prize.
What you give in return
Every one of these awards starts with an account, which puts your profile under that site's privacy policy. Several of these sites say in their policies that they may sell or share personal information. ScholarshipOwl's entry is automatic on signup, so signing up for the service is signing up for the drawing. Our privacy guide has the details.
Our take
Enter the site-run awards on the sites you already use. Do not open new accounts just for drawings unless you are comfortable with the privacy terms. Spend most of your scholarship time on local and merit awards, where effort counts.
Do these awards affect our scores?
No. Site-run awards are listed on each review but are not a scoring criterion, because every student's chance in a random drawing depends on entry numbers no one publishes.
A quick checklist before entering any drawing
- Read the official rules page, not only the banner.
- Note the deadline and the date winners are announced.
- Check who contacts winners and from which address.
- Check whether entering signs you up for marketing, and switch it off if you prefer.
- Put the notification window in your calendar so a winning email does not expire in your spam folder.
Five minutes on these steps is enough, and it protects you from the most common mistakes.

Frequently asked questions
Which site-run no-essay scholarship is the biggest?
By headline amount, ScholarshipOwl describes a $50,000 No Essay Scholarship paid as monthly $1,000 awards, while Niche and BigFuture each describe a $40,000 award. The structures differ, so compare the rules, not only the headline.
Do I have to pay to enter?
No. ScholarshipOwl says its award has no fee, and none of the site-run awards we read asks for one. A fee to enter is a red flag.
